Mary Jo Powell, age 87 of McKinney, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, at Necessity Baptist Church with Rev. Charles West officiating. Interment will follow in the Necessity Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be 5 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at Morehart Mortuary.
Mary Jo Cox Powell was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Dallas, to parents; Jimmy Cox and Opal Satterwhite Cox. She grew up in Breckenridge and graduated from Breckenridge High School. She moved back to Breckenridge in 1980, and was employed by Cox Insurance as their bookkeeper. She was the treasurer for the United Way Fund for many years.
Her real passion was the time she spent at Necessity Baptist church worshipping God, working with the children, singing and playing the piano. Mrs. Powell relocated to McKinney in 2006 and was a member of Waddill Street Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and two daughters, Tami Jo Andrews and Karen Rene Johnson; one granddaughter, Monica Powell and one great-granddaughter, Madison.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her three sons: Blake Powell and wife Pam of Magnolia, Ark,, Clay Powell and wife Cindy of McKinney, Martin Powell and wife Bonnie of Hawley; one brother, J.D. Cox Jr. of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister, Artie Mitchell and husband Jim of Necessity; nine grandchildren: Wes, Brian, Stephanie, Leslie, Stephen, Portia, Brody, Spencer, Rylee and 11 great-grandchildren.
