Suspect apprehended in BFAAC break-in

ERIC MEDRANO

The Breckenridge Police Department made an arrest in the recent burglary and arson of the Breckenridge Fine Arts and Athletic Center.
Eric Medrano, 17, of Breckenridge was taken into custody Thursday by BPD officers.
According to Breckenridge Police Department Chief Larry Mahan, an unnamed juvenile will be taken into custody at a later time.
“The arrest was as a result of much work done by the Breckenridge Police Department and from citizens of the Breckenridge community,” Mahan said. “The community came together and helped with information that helped lead to the arrest. The investigation was under the direction of Captain Jim Pence and Sgt. Jeff Baker, but all officers of the BPD worked very hard on this investigation.”
Medrano has been charged with arson is a second-degree felony that carries a punishment of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Bond was set at $30,000 for the arson charge by Justice of the Peace Mike Heatley Friday morning.
At 6:17 a.m. Saturday, June 19, a fire alarm alerted authorities to the BFAAC where Breckenridge Fire Department personnel found smoke inside the building.
The suspects then entered BISD Athletic Director Steve Freeman’s office with the help of a fire extinguisher, using the device to shatter the office window to gain entry.
Upon entry, the suspects destroyed several of Freeman’s personal items, belongings.
While in the office, the suspects attempted to burn Freeman’s desk, along with a filing cabinet and used the fire extinguisher to destroy a flat screen television mounted on the wall. A desktop computer from the high school girls coaches’ office was stolen along with a laptop computer.
Estimated cost of the damages at the BFAAC was in excess of $13,900.
A $2,500 reward was offered for information that lead to or contributed to the arrest of the suspects.
