A slow start didn't hamper the Breckenridge Bucks as they stayed atop the district standings with a 65-44 road victory at Comanche.
The Indians held a 17-14 lead after the opening eight minutes. The Bucks defense tightened up and held Comanche to only 10 points over the middle quarters.
The lead changed hands three times during the second quarter before junior guard Rigo Gallegos hit a bucket to put Breckenridge ahead 22-21 as the half ended.
The Bucks took control in the second half and never trailed. Gallegos exploded for 18 points over the final two quarters. The Bucks outscored the Indians 43-23 in the second half.
"We gave up some points against the press in the first quarter," Bucks coach Rob Ogle said. "We did a much better job defensively in the second and third quarters. Rigo (Gallegos) got hot in the second half and we just rode him. We had a little bit of foul trouble. Gerardo (Duron) came in and hit some big shots for us too."
Gallegos finished with a team-high 22 points, including two 3-pointers.
Junior guard Caleb Spoon chipped in with 13 points while senior post Lane Morris reached double-figures with 11 points.
Senior guard Gerardo Duron picked up all seven of his points in the second half. Sophomore guard Anthony Ramirez and senior post Alex Benitez each added six points.
Spoon grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Morris collected five boards while Gallegos and Benitez each had four.
Anthony Ramirez and junior guard Clay Boaz totaled two rebounds apiece while freshman Mateo Ramirez added one rebound.
Anthony Ramirez passed out a team-leading five assists. Spoon dished out four assists. Benitez added two assists while Morris and Mateo Ramirez had one assist apiece.
Anthony Ramirez swiped a team-high five steals while Morris added two steals. Gallegos, Duron, Spoon and Mateo Ramirez each had one steal.
The Bucks will host the Lions Club Tournament held Thursday " Saturday, Dec. 27-29. Breckenridge opens play at 10:30 a.m. Thursday against Woodson.
