Gov. Abbott closes schools for remainder of the school year

Fri, 04/17/2020 - 1:55 pm

In a press conference on Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced the closure of schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, as a protective measure against COVID-19.

Gov. Abbott had originally closed schools around the state until May 4, an announcement made on March 31.

“Today’s executive order also addresses schools. The team of doctors advising us determined it would be unsafe to allow students to gather in schools for the foreseeable future. As a result school classrooms are closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year,” Abbott said. “That includes all public, private and higher education institutions.”

Abbott followed up saying that teachers will be allowed in their classrooms to do video instruction or to gather materials and other things needed to perform their duties.

According to Abbott, Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Moarth will provide more details in terms of how to proceed finishing the year and how to conduct graduation ceremonies.
