Police Chief announces retirement

He has been apart of the City of Breckenridge for more than three decades, but the city Police Chief has officially announced his retirement to the Breckenridge City Commissioners.

Breckenridge Police Chief, Larry Mahan, announced in front of the commissioners in their Nov. 5 meeting that he will retire on January 31, 2020. “I just wanted to let you all know that I will be leaving after 21 years as Chief and 32 years total with the city,” said Mahan. 

Buckaroo Book Night

BISD faculty members took time out to read a story at the annual Book Night event at Buckaroo Stadium. Among the readers were: Prairie Freeman, Tammy McGrady, Coach Casey Hubble (who read "Horton Hatches the Golden Egg"), Molly Johnson, Kenna Rainey, RaKel Paul and Barbra Collinsworth.

Local Deputy, wife recovering from house fire

No one is ever prepared to lose everything, but the community support surrounding Bill and Melynda Flournoy has been sincerely appreciated.

The Flournoy's house burned down on Oct. 3 of this year, taking everything that the family had with it. Bill Flournoy is a Stephen’s County Sheriff's Deputy and was home with his wife at the time of the fire.

Local woman finishes 112th at Berlin Marathon

While most of us are getting those extra hours of sleep on a Saturday morning, Barbara Medina, local Physician Assistant, is out running in preparation for her next marathon, which will be in London, April 26, 2020. Most in the community are not aware of her running marathons because she doesn't talk about it beyond, family, friends, co-workers and her patients, where she works with Dr. Prater.

Memories of WWII in 2019

The memories and pictures of World War II are beginning to fade, but for one local veteran, WWII will never be forgotten.

Zane Judkins, a 95-year old World War II veteran and Bronze Star Recipient, was drafted into the United States Army in Mineral Wells in 1943. “From there we were… they shipped us to Grenada, Mississippi,” said Judkins, “That is where I took my basic training — we stayed there and then went on maneuvers in Tennessee, and then after that, they transferred us to Fort Jackson, South Carolina.” 

History of Red Ribbon Week

What started as a non-profit in 1980 to encourage parents to begin to lead the way in drug prevention has now turned into a national week of drug prevention called Red Ribbon Week.

National Family Partnership, which was once known as the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth, organized what is now known as Red Ribbon Week. NFP focuses on drug prevention in youth.
