The Rotary Club of Breckenridge received a visit from Breckenridge Independent School District’s Director of Libraries, Abby Olson Moore. The Director of Libraries provided the group with an update on BISD’s distribution of new technology such as Chromebook to students.

The district is moving towards a more technology-friendly environment to better aid students with changes in education for the future.

“To put things in perspective, we have approximately 415 devices at the Breckenridge High School,” Olson-Moore said. “Approximately 325 devices at the Breckenridge Junior High, 400 at South Elementary, East Elementary has 125 devices for kids and 25 devices for teachers. East will be getting 100 new tablets and will be working with prekindergarten, kindergarten, and first-grade students. All together, with just Chromebooks, we have about 1,300 in the district. Our library system is managing all of those and we welcome the challenge.”

The technology allows BISD to properly adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic and provide students with the needed equipment if in quarantined.

“Based on the situation from a week in a half ago, we had 55 kids who were quarantined in 48 hours,” BHS Principal William Paul said. “If we hadn’t been in a situation where we didn’t put this technology out, it could have been a nightmare for the school district.”

The technology shift for BISD will provide more assistance inside the class room and produce a more thought-provoking classroom environment.

“Google Classroom is the platform we are using for our online learning,” Olson-Moore said. “It will allow students to turn in their essays and assignments. Starting our prekindergarten and kindergarten students with technology such as tablets will prepare our students for the future.”

BISD is hoping to complete the process of providing junior high and high school students with Chromebook technology by the end of the second week of September.
