Jim then served in the U.S. Air Force, in the 27th Fighter Wing, during the Korean War, from 1948 to 1952.

The couple married in Stamford on Nov. 6, 1948. After his four years in the U.S. Air Force, he began his preaching career in Arlington and then later at Luling, Bowie and Abilene. He attended Abilene Christian College from 1964 to 1967, while serving as the supervisor of Mabee Dorm and preaching at Oakland Drive Church of Christ.

The couple has three children, who are Mike, Robin and Dan. Mike and Cathy Cox live in Breckenridge, Robin and Scott Wolfe live in Lewisville and Dan and Esther Cox live in Abilene.
