Possum Kingdom Women’s Club hosting upcoming events

The Possum Kingdom Women’s Club has been apart of the community by supporting other non-profits and schools for 50 years.

“We do fundraising for scholarships for Graford High School,” Jo Lynn Miller, the club’s publicity chair, said. “We have four people on scholarships that we are following through their semesters in college.”

She said each year the club awards two $500 scholarships to recent high school graduates and two scholarships to college students who they have been following.

Miller said the group also fundraises for Charlie’s Angels, United Electric Cooperative for people who need help paying their bills, The Possum Kingdom Volunteer Fire Department and Camp Grady Spruce.

Miller said the group currently has 52 members who meet on the last Thursday of each month at the PK Chamber of Commerce building. She said the group has two events coming up in March.

“Every year we do one big annual fundraiser and this year we are going to do a Hawaiian luau,” Miller said. “It will be (at 6 p.m.) on March 16 and it will have Hawaiian dancers, fire throwers, drummers, leis and of course there will be a meal included.”

The event will be bring your own beer and held at the PK chamber of commerce building. A prize will also be given out to the best dressed attendee.

Tickets if bought before Feb. 15 cost $30 for adults after the date passes the price rises to $35. The entrance fee for children 12 and under will be $20. Tickets can be purchased at Pondera Properties, Community National Bank and Darlene’s or by calling Kay Lynn Bridges at 940-328-2118.

On March 2nd, the Women’s Club will for the first time ever hold a pancake breakfast for the Mardi Gras weekend. Miller said the event is traditionally held annually on labor day weekend but the group hopes to expand the breakfast to a twice a year event.

The breakfast will be from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Charlie’s Angels Building. The meal will cost $7 for adults and $4 for children under 10. Any PK VFD, EMS or law enforcement member can eat for free.
