Rotary Club host two special guest

Wed, 11/18/2020 - 5:00 am

A new girl’s troop and family community health in 4-H were the highlight discussions at the Rotary Club during the November 10 meeting.

Guest feature speaker was Matt Hise, who serves as the Scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Troop 63.

“I am going to try and start a girls troop in Breckenridge,” Matt Hise, Scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Troop 63 said. “This will not be girls selling cookies. These are girls who will essentially be doing the boy scout program. It will be a fundamental character and leadership development program through an outdoor-focused theatre. We would meet four times every other week for two months with a focused theme on our camp every other month.”

The new group will allow girls access to other programs that normally are available to boys troops.

“For the girls in this community, it would give them access to the high adventure camping sites,” Hise said. “I am looking for someone to charter us. To say we will own this as well as the girl’s scout, boys scout, and cub scout troops.”

The age group will be 11-17, with girls having the opportunity to earn Eagle Scout before the age of 18. The program is planning to start in January, with only five girls needed.

The Rotary Club also featured a visit from Sumer Russell, Stephens County’s extension agent, promoting family community health in 4-H.

“On my extension side, I help programs through our schools, which is a gardening program,” Russell said. “The program is called learn-grow and go. All year long we grow a garden, then we harvest those and turn them into recipes.”

Although COVID-19 restrictions hindered the recipes making process, Russell was still able to interact with students.

“I was able to do videos and sent them to the kids, and they were able to make the recipes at home and send them back to me,” Russell said. “We have a garden at South Elementary and is for about 100 third graders, we are also looking to start a garden at East Elementary.”
