SMH continues search for volunteers

Wed, 11/25/2020 - 5:00 am

Stephens Memorial Hospital continues its search for volunteers for the senior meal delivery program to aid senior citizens in need.

Businesses, organizations, and citizens can adopt a route to delivery or can split the days driving with co-workers or friends.

“Earlier in the year, due to budget issues, the city had to close the senior center,” Chris Curtis, Director of Business Development said in an October press release. “With the closure of that, SMH took on preparing meals for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and delivering those meals. That’s a lot to orchestrate, and we need all the help we can get. We’ve partnered with the Chamber to help get drivers and the word out.”

Between Meals on Wheels and the Senior Meals, homebound citizens receive hot meals five days per week. In addition to helping fund these programs, SMH is also looking for help delivering the meals. The routes generally take less than 30 minutes to deliver.

SMH’s dietary department prepares 300 plus meals per week to be delivered. The cost to feed a senior, three times a week for an entire year is $625.

SMH is looking for citizens who can adopt the community’s seniors. If you have any questions regarding the program you can contact Chris Curtis or Sarah Shumate at 254-559-2241.
