Breckenridge Woman’s Forum hosts ‘An evening of Merry Music’

The Woman’s Forum is slated to host their annual fundraiser event, “An Evening of Merry Music,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Woman’s Forum. Tickets are on sale at the Chamber of Commerce for $15. 

Deserts, coffee, tea and cider will be served during the scheduled entertainment, which includes performances by a group of Christmas carolers from Eastland, dressed in Charles Dickens period attire.

Additionally, a Praise and Worship group from First Baptist of Breckenridge will perform and includes several from the Junior Forum.

Stephens County’s first female justice of the peace looks back before 90th birthday

Like many women her age, Veva Ford has lots of stories to tell, but the story of how she became the first female Stephens County Justice of the Peace remains relevent even today.

Ford worked odd jobs around Breckenridge until eventually taking a job as a clerk for justice of the peace Sid Rhodes, but before completing his 10th year  Rhodes decided to retire, foisting Ford into public service and finish Rhodes’ term.

“They appointed me because I was the only person that knew about that office in the whole county I guess,” Ford said.

Mark Shell to speak at Peoples Church

Evangelist Mark Shell will speak during the 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. service at the Peoples Church. The church invites the public to worship alongside its members for these special services.

According to Shell's bio on his website, he describes himself as "a husband and a father. His greatest joy in life is his wife, Dee, and their two sons, Derek and Parker. He believes God created this great institution called family and considers himself very blessed to have such a wonderful life. His family travels with him when the schedule allows.

Donuts and cool dudes set for Wednesday

The North Elementary PTO Team offers free events to our students and parents occasionally.  

Last year, parents were so generous and wonderful supporting our fundraisers that the PTO wanted to show its appreciation in some way.  

Two events,  both opportunities for parents, mentors, caregivers, grandparents and just a loved one to come to North Elementary and take 10-15 minutes of downtime to sit and eat a snack or treat with their student and just bond with them.  

SHAC prepares Thanksgiving, Christmas giving

The Breckenridge ISD Health Advisory Council (SHAC) met to review projects completed and plans slated for the holidays to meet the needs of the backpack kids they serve every Friday at each of the BISD schools.

The group is a community-directed organization that includes parents from the community and a few professionals from BISD. The SHAC mission is to ensure children in BISD will have healthy bodies and minds through projects directed by the community.

Chamber honors members, looks to 2018 at banquet

The Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet Saturday, highlighting a few area businessmen and women while also raising funds for 2018.

In the run up to the annual banquet, the chamber generated plenty of fervor with plans to give away a truck, a $1,000 door prize, raffling dozens of items, including out-of-state vacation packages as part its annual fundraiser. Those that showed up before the meal saw a performance by stunt pilot David Martin.

Breckenridge mentor students create artwork for Dr. Goodall’s House

Breckenridge Mentor Students gathered at the Breckenridge Art Center, to create Christmas artwork for Dr. Goodall’s House. 

Each year Dr. Goodall’s House-A Family Resource Center sends out Christmas cards as an annual appeal for donations to the Center. 

Twenty-five years ago, parent organization, Virginia’s House, opened its’ doors to help the children of Young and Stephens Counties and began the yearly tradition of the annual appeal. It wasn’t until around 1998 when, then counselor, Trish Remington suggested using children’s artwork for the annual appeal cards. 

Where are they now?

Autumn Taylor, a 2012 graduate of Breckenridge High School, returned to her Alma mater recently to take in a Buckaroo football game, visit family and friends and teach students about the new and expanding field of Virtual Reality.

Taylor attended the Moody School of Communications, at the University of Texas at Austin and earned a degree in marketing and public relations, but turned her focus to helping design and develop video games and then help market them while a student at UT.
