‘Pride of Breckenridge’ ends marching season with top-20 finish

The Pride of Breckenridge High School Marching Band ended its competition season with a top-20 finish at the UIL 3A Area B Contest in Denton Saturday.

 Breckenridge began drilling at 8 a.m., making modifications to their instruments to compensate for the near freezing temperatures, and running over routines before what would later turnout to be their final competitive performance.

Breckenridge students take prize for Miller Park additions

Four Breckenridge High School students placed first at the Texas Midwest Community Network’s annual conference at the Abilene Convention Center last Wednesday.

Students Diana Patterson, Elyssa Glick, Mackenzie Harris and Braxton Post composed the team competing against other Midwest schools in the Leadership TMCN program.

Sloan Everett remembered through memorial, ride

The Everett family and friends gathered Saturday morning  to remember and honor Sloan Everett with a tree dedication in Breckenridge’s Miller Park and a letter was read from the Everett family. 

The tree is located on the walking path just behind the American Legion building along with a memorial stone to commemorate the life and contributions of Sloan Everett.

BJHS teacher named Arrow Ford program recipient

Breckenridge Junior High School social studies teacher Donny Funderburg’s face may become a bit more familiar after being named a prize recipients of the Arrow Ford Teacher Tribute Program.

As part of being named a recipient, Funderburg will receive a year-long lease of the car of his choice from Arrow Ford of Abilene, appear on commercials highlighting the program and various other prizes presented during a ceremony last Tuesday inside the BJHS gymnasium.

Funderburg received the award after BJHS student Casey Jameson nominated him for the award.

Pride of Breckenridge advances at UIL

The Breckenridge High School “Pride of Breckenridge” Marching Band scored first divisions across the judging panel at the UIL Regional Marching Band Competition last Saturday at in Early.

The band will proceed to the UIL Area Marching Contest at the C.H. Collins Athletics Complex in Denton, tentatively set for 12:45 p.m. Saturday, when they will continue performing “Phobias” by Luke Millican.

Families looking to save a few bucks on gently used summer clothes will have the opportunity to purchase as many items as they can fit into a bad as part of the $1 sale through the Children’s Chest of Breckenridge.

The Children’s Chest is sponsored by the First United Methodist Church of Breckenridge and its $1 sale is just the first of many activities planned for the upcoming holiday season.

Big-top circus coming to Miller Park Thursday

The Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will make a return to Breckenridge’s Miller Park, following a two-year absence.

The circus partnered with the Breckenridge Rotary Club this year and will perform for the first time in Breckenridge since 2015, beginning with two shows at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.

“The circus has been around since 1985. It started as a four-man circus, and they grew very rapidly after that. It’s been on the road every year since,” Culpepper & Merriweather Office Administrator Jim Royal said.

Alvarado crowned homecoming queen

Last week’s homecoming festivities capped off with Surisadai Alvarado named homecoming queen at halftime of last Friday night’s homecoming game against Dublin.

Lauren Satterwhite, the Breckenridge High School 2016 homecoming queen, crowned Alvarado during a halftime ceremony that capped off a week of activities.

“I’m pretty surprised, but excited.” Alvarado said. “I was shocked and excited that my peers and classmates thought of me. I’m very appreciative.

New items on display at fine arts center

The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center has acquired a new festival dress and head-dress to be added to their permanent collection. The BFAC now has 30 very colorful festival dresses on display in that permanent exhibit.

The festival dresses in the BFAC collection represents the three festivals in Texas, which includes the Tyler Rose Festival, the San Antonio Fiesta Festival and the Corpus Christi Buccaneer Days.
