Investigations into last weeks incident regarding a shooting threat written on a bathroom wall are still ongoing for Breckenridge ISD.

On Friday, attendance for the district was less than 60 percent. Superintendent Tim Seymore said if parents were to keep their children home from school on Friday for safety reasons, they would be excused.

In response to the threat, law enforcement have stepped up their presence in and around the schools. Last week, Seymore said they were going in and out of the schools all day, driving by and monitoring the situations. This was also made imperative by the numerous activities going on scheduled for this weekend, which included a basketball tournament and a play put on at the high school theater. No event was cancelled.

“We responded with extra security during the school day and all through the tournament this weekend we were present,” Police Chief Larry Mahan said. “We did our basic investigation on the threat.”

Fast forward to Monday and Seymore said things are appearing to be back to normal. While he did not have numbers at the time of publication, Seymore said his perception is the attendance numbers have gotten back to normal and at the moment there is not more police than normal stationed at the school.

Regarding the threat, Seymore said they have a lead on where it came from but could not divulge any information at this time. Mahan also said something similar, saying they have about two to three leads at the moment, but nothing is solid.

Mahan said that while the threat is scary and something to be taken with absolute seriousness, he has experienced threats like this before.

“Over the years its happened several times,” Mahan said. “Even before school shootings became prevalent we used to have bomb threats.”

The district also had their regular board meeting on Monday. Included in the agenda is an item to address the issue.

The Breckenridge American will continue to update this situation as more information becomes available.
