Homecoming Week

Homecoming week has come and gone in Breckenridge, with the festivities capping off tonight in the football game against Dublin. The festivities included dress-up days at the schools, a parade and pep rallies on Friday. Those pep rallies included one for the high school at 10 a.m. and one at East Elementary at 1:15. Tonight the town will also learn who King and Queen are. Regarding the parade, the winning floats were:

• First — Little Bucks Cheerleaders

• Second — Wee School

• Third — Chelsi Hodges Miles and the girls with the ponies

Gas update

Gas prices in Texas have fallen a little more than a cent per gallon this week, averaging $2.59 per gallon as of Sunday, Sept. 23. Gas prices at this time of year have fluctuated over the past few years in Texas, ranging anywhere from $1.93 (2016) to $3.21 (2013) for the week of Sept. 24, according to GasBuddy.

Nationally, gas prices have fallen a little less than a cent per gallon, and is at $2.83 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. At this time last year, gas prices were more than 15 cents lower. Compared with last month, gas prices are about 1.4 cents lower per gallon.

County Commissioners

meet

The county commissioners met Monday and voted to keep the burn ban off for the next two weeks. They also voted to keep the 2019 Constable and Sheriff’s Office fees at the same rate they were the previous fiscal year. These fees apply when the office serves civil paperwork, such as serving papers to notify someone they are being sued. The commissioners meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Their next meeting will be Oct. 8.

Perry and Lang

Texas Sen. Charles Perry and Rep. Mike Lang visited Breckenridge Wednesday and held a town hall. A variety of local officials showed up, as well as some residents. The hall covered a variety of topics, such as CPS reform, school safety and education, property tax reform and the politics of Texas and the nation. Lang is running unopposed this year.

Bucks lose to Dublin

The Buckaroos lost to the Dublin Lions Friday night 22-21 in Breckenridge. Kickoff was at 7:30 p.m. The Bucks now sit at 2-3 while Dublin is 5-0. The Bucks got off to a slow start offensively with three turnovers and zero points in the first half. Despite the effort, which resulted in a nail-biter that came down to the last second, Bckenridge lost homecoming for the second year in a row to Dublin. Next week the Bucks have their bye.

Car crash

A Breckenridge man was killed in a one-vehicle car crash Tuesday evening, after he collided with a concrete barrier and the vehicle caught fire while traveling east on Interstate 40. James Jenson, 36, was driving an 18-wheeler towing a semi-trailer. According to a press release from officials, Jenson swerved off the road into the south barrow ditch for reasons unknown. The road was dry and the vehicle was destroyed. The investigation is ongoing.

Tax Reform 2.0

U.S. Rep Jodey Arrington backed a package of tax bills in the House of Representatives this week. The package of bills includes three separate bills and would make the tax cuts made from last year’s tax bill permanent. Initially, those tax cuts were supposed to expire after 2025. Other key components of the reform include doubling the Child Tax credit, a Paid Family Leave tax credit and a doubled exemption from the Death Tax, according to a press release from officials.
