(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) Roxanne Montoya is taking over the Breckenridge American and returning to a passion for local newspapers.

It was a passion for local newspapers that drove Roxanne Montoya to seek another position in the industry and what led to her next adventure at the Breckenridge American.

Montoya previously worked for four years at Alpine Avalanche in Alpine, Texas and for five months remotely for the Hernando Sun in Brooksville, Florida.

After most recently working as a Spanish interpreter for clients such as health care, 911, first responders, education, government agencies and more, she felt the call to return to local newspapers.

“I really feel that I love newspapers, especially community papers, because people can read national papers or statewide papers, and then they're all going to pretty much talk about the same thing. …That's why Breckenridge I felt would be a good fit, because I could get to know the local community and things that you don't really see on the national scale, necessarily,” Montoya said.

Along with her newspaper background, Montoya has extensive experience with conducting interviews while working for marketing firms and through other roles.

“I love talking to all kinds of people about anything and everything interesting,” she said. “I have a big interest in talking to people about their past, or what future plans they have on. I'm a people person.”

With a passion for newspapers, reading, writing, interviewing and people, journalism was a natural fit for Montoya. She looks forward to meeting the community and getting to know those who play both big and small roles in Breckenridge.

“Whether it's business owners, the schools or anybody that is set on improving Breckenridge, or it's somebody like that's a big part of the community that everybody knows about, ...I would love to get to know people, talk to them and hear their stories,” she said. “I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone.”

Montoya said she is looking to connect with the community, whether that be students doing well in athletics, academics or through other district programs or community members with interesting or unique stories.

She hopes to be able to expand the coverage of the Breckenridge American and help expand its horizons within the community.

“I want to enable the paper to reach new heights, to make it very successful. I look forward to helping make it an award-winning paper. ...I look forward to contributing to its success and helping it grow further.”
