BISD approves election

Wed, 02/13/2019 - 12:00 am

The Breckenridge ISD School Board met Monday at noon and attended to regular business, including district reports and officially announcing this year’s election. Due to the change in the meeting’s time, which is normally at 6:30 p.m., students of the month were not announced at the meeting.

The board approved the May 4 election, which will have Place 3, 4 and 5 up for re-election. They said four people have filed to run, Russell Creager and Patrick Escalon, who are incumbents, and Roy Russell along with Carol Kennedy. They will canvas the election at their May 13 meeting.

Superintendent Tim Seymore gave his monthly reports, which included enrollment numbers, tax collections and various announcements. Seymore said the enrollment rate dropped this month and their attendance numbers are still lower than where he said it should be, due to a day earlier in the year where several students across the district were absent. He said tax collections are currently at 79 percent, which is five percent higher than this time last year.

Seymore also announced the marquee sign outside of Breckenridge High School will be replaced using a budget amendment discussed at a prior board meeting. Seymore said it has been ordered and it will be larger, full-colored and digital.

In their regular agenda, the board approved Update 112 of the Texas Association of School Board’s (TASB) legal and local policies. It gives an update to a variety of policy aspects. One included high school students being required to have training in how to interact with a peace officer, which will then go on their transcript. The board already has students go through this kind of training. Other changes included policy on students with dyslexia. The district had already been practicing the changes listed, but the passing of this update will match the district’s policy with those actions.

The board also approved Seymore’ employment recommendations for administrative personnel. All current administrators remained on the list and will have either a year added to their contract or operate under a one-year contract.

The Breckenridge ISD School Board meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Administrative Building. Their next meeting will be held on March 25, due to Spring Break.
