BISD disapprove the addition of boys, girls soccer to the Athletic Program

Wed, 01/27/2021 - 5:00 am

The Breckenridge Independent School District board of trustees disapproved an agenda item on Monday, January 18, on the possibility of adding boys and girls soccer to the BISD Athletic Program.

In a 5-2 vote, the board of trustees disapproved the agenda item after a survey was completed by student/athletics of BISD, and provided data of minimum interest for the sport.

“We surveyed about 600 students face-to-face, in sixth through twelfth grade” Casey Pearce, BISD Athletics Director said. “The percentage of athletes answering “yes” to the survey about interest in the sport was about 28%. I thought this survey was valuable for me to get into classrooms and see kids face-to-face. I believe we received genuine information and allowed students to answer honestly without pressure.”

Once students returned from the holiday break, the BISD Athletics program surveyed student/athletics on the possibility of students playing the sport. From freshman to upperclassman, the survey piqued the interest of students on the curiosity for the sport.

For the program to be successful, BISD would need to make a six-year commitment to the soccer program and add new coaches to the coaching staff. The school district would also have to look at adjustments for a playing field, and the cost for referees to officiate the contest.

Soccer sports season would work incongruent with four sports; baseball, basketball, softball, track and create other matters for BISD.

“My concerns are the financial responsibility and the travel that would be required to find teams to play,” Carrol Kanady, Board Members of Place 5 said. “I think in the future, this will be worth looking back into, but we are going to be strapped financially.”

BISD also approved an agenda item to adopted the Trustee Election Order. This process will also appoint election early voting clerks, and election judges for the School Trustee Election scheduled for May 1, 2021, for Places 1 and 2.

Citizens interested in a place on the 2021 BISD school board ballot will need to provide information to the school district by Friday, February 12.
