Breckenridge Independent School District announced a memorandum of understanding with Tarleton State regarding the automatic acceptance of students graduating within the top 25% of their respective classes from BISD.

The plan was announced during a special schedule BISD board meeting on Monday, July 20 at the BISD administration building.

The agreement goes into effect immediately and will offer benefits to the recent Class of 2020 graduates as well as future BHS graduates.

The memorandum of understanding will waive the requirements for such admission scores as the ACT or SAT. Students who meet Tarleton’s criteria can receive a wavier for the university admission application fee. Students should be aware that not submitting test scores may compromise their considerations for a scholarship, according to the memo randum.

BISD graduates can also qualify for Tarleton’s Guaranteed Award Program (GAP) and attend Tarleton while receiving an award guarantee of $1,000 above the GAP level. Students can qualify if ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class. Students can qualify for $500 above the GAP if ranked in the top 25% (but not top 10%) of their graduating class. GAP eligibility can be found on the Tarleton State University website at http://www.tarltonstate. us/gap.

Tarleton will provide BISD with ongoing support with such things as financial aid, admission, and degree counseling, work-study mentorship, peer mentoring, and other programs.

The BISD board of trustees also agreed on the purchase of Chromebooks for junior high and high school students.

The approval authorizes the purchase of Chromebooks and other technology tools, devices in the amount up to $130,000. The reason for the purchase is to provide students with greater access to learning in a digital/ remote environment.

BISD will use the 2020-2021 federal CARES Act and Instructional Materials & Technology (IMAT) funds to purchase the technology for students.
