Saturday, Oct. 27

• Stephens County Health Fair will be held from 7 to 11 a.m at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center at 301 S. Rose street. There will be more than 40 Health-related vendors at the event. There will also be free lab tests and $15 flu shots. For more information call 254-559-2295

• The class of 2023 J.R. High Halloween Ball. The ball will be from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Shawna’s Bake Barn, located at 2603 W. Walker. Tickets will be sold for $5 ahead of time at lunch on Friday’s prior to event, or $7 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Class of 2023 Project graduation and the Junior/Senior Prom.

• The City of Breckenridge is helping residents recycle their tires from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until the truck fills at the City Convenience Station, located at 1548 FM 287 in Breckenridge. Each person is limited to six tires. Equipment and tractor tires will not be permitted.

Wednesday, Oct. 31

• This year’s Walker Street Trick or Treat will be all day Halloween from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Businesses all over town, including the Breckenridge American, will be participating by allowing children to come by and get some candy throughout the day. If you are wanting to participate this year or want more information, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 254-559-2301l.

Friday, Nov. 9

• Fifth graders at South Elementary will pay tribute to veterans for Veteran’s Day in a special program from 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Fifth grade social studies teacher Jennifer McKay will lead the program.

Saturday, Nov. 10

• The Stephens County Humane Society is hosting its annual Wags & Whiskers 5k and Furry Fun Run. All proceeds will go to the humane society. The event starts at 8:30 with a staggered racing schedule by age. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome to participate with their human. To be guaranteed a t-shirt, participants must be registered by Oct. 13. The cost is anywhere from $15 to $30 depending on age. Race day registration will be an additional $5.

• The Breckenridge VFW Auxiliary 7767 is hosting a Steak Cook-Off at the VFW 216 E. Williams St. The steak contest is sanctioned by the Steak Cook-off Association World Championship qualifier. Proceeds will go to help fund the local VFW Auxiliary. There are three categories, which are appetizers, one-bite challenge and steak. There will be cash prizes in each category. The entry fee for the steak category is $150 and the one-bite and appetizer is $25. The contest will begin at 8 a.m. with setup and then at 10 a.m. the cooks will pick their steaks. Monday, Nov. 12

• Multiple locations around Breckenridge will begin collecting shoebox gifts with toys, supplies and hygienic items to gift to children. This is for the Samaritan’s Purse project. The project will collect from Nov. 12 to Nov. 19 with the goal of collecting more than 12,238 gifts for Operation Christmas Child. The goal is to reach 11 million children in need. Wednesday, Nov. 15

• The Breckenridge Junior High and High School will have a combined program at 9 a.m. in the Bailey Auditorium in honor of Veteran’s Day.

Friday, Nov. 30

• The 11th Annual La-Mancha Cook-Off will be held at the La Mancha Ranch on Lake Leon 402 County Road 567 Eastland, Texas. Cook-ff proceeds will benefit local animal shelters and rescues. For more information on the competition, please call 254-647-3651
