As the start of classes approaches, Breckenridge ISD is preparing for the implementation of a statewide cell phone ban in Texas schools.

The law is not yet implemented for BISD, but it has been on the school board’s radar and they are waiting to hear back from legal, as to how to write the policy, according to Terri Collie, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent.

Collie said that Superintendent Prairie Freeman has a call in with Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) shortly and the board is hoping to get it on the August school board meeting agenda to put into the school’s policy.

“We are just waiting to get direction on how to word the policy,” Collie said.

House Bill 1481, introduced by Rep. Caroline Fairly of Amarillo, was signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott during the last legislative session. The bill bans K-12 students from using personal electronic devices during school hours, with certain exceptions. Any device capable of telecommunications or digital communication like a smartwatch are included in the ban.

The policy is being implemented in school districts across the state at the start of the school year.

The BISD school board has their next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, after the school year begins Tuesday, Aug. 5.
