Candidates file in May local elections

Candidates across Stephens County filed for a place on the ballot in May, with both contested and uncontested local races upcoming.

The filing period was open from Wednesday, Jan. 14 through Friday, Feb. 13. The last day to file a declaration of write-in candidacy was Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Candidate applications could be obtained and submitted for the May election from each separate county entity. 

Local entities that had seats up for election in May were the city of Breckenridge, Breckenridge ISD and Stephens Memorial Hospital. Contested elections, where more than one candidate filed for a position, will be held for the city and BISD.

Early voting in the May election will run from April 20-28 and election day will be Saturday, May 2. The last day to register to vote in the May election will be Thursday, April 2 and the last day to apply for a ballot by mail will be Monday, April 20.

Shown below are local elections in May and candidates who filed to run for open seats. If an election has no opposition for an open seat, those elections can be canceled.

City of Breckenridge

Four candidates filed for the position of mayor which were Bob Sims, who filed for reelection, along with candidates Paul Huntington Jr., Brent Ensey and Kord Trammel. Huntington Jr. serves as the Place 4 commissioner and, if elected, would vacate his seat.

Blake Hamilton filed for reelection to his Place 1 seat on the commission along with candidate John Green. Current Place 2 Commissioner Greg Akers did not file for reelection. Justin Rose was the sole candidate to file for that position.

Breckenridge ISD

Breckenridge ISD has four school board positions up for election in May, with only one seat having contested candidates. Paul Lippe filed for reelection to the Place 4 seat along with candidates Leslie Hamilton, Tonya Wright-Taylor and Kenneth Taylor.

The Place 3, 6 and 7 had only the incumbents file for reelection to their positions. Those incumbents are Ty Bartoskewitz (Place 3), Nic McClymond (Place 6) and Chad Townson (Place 7).

Stephens Memorial Hospital

The Stephens Memorial Hospital Board of Directors has four positions that are up for election in May with only the incumbents filling for those positions. The candidates who filed for reelection were Wade Toombs, Todd Tidwell, Bruce Curry and Kevin Simmons.
