Breckenridge City Commissioners voted Tuesday, Oct. 11 to approve a local option election for the legalization of the sale of all alcoholic beverages, including mixed beverages, within the city of Breckenridge. The election is set to be held Saturday, May 6, 2023.

The current alcohol sales ordinances allow only for the sale of beer, wine, and malt beverages to be sold at stores and restaurants in the city. Mixed beverage sales are only allowed within private clubs for club members and their guests.

The Breckenridge Downtown Development Council (BDDC), spearheaded by JB Sparks, collected signatures in August for a petition to legalize the sale of mixed beverages within city limits.

“They (BDDC) were hoping to get this going in November, but we didn’t get it in quite enough time. The petition was filed on (Wednesday) Aug. 24. They were required to have 338 signatures,” City Secretary Jessica Sutter said. “They did bring that petition back and all verified at 355 (signatures). So they had plenty of signatures that had been completely verified. The petition has been filed for at least 30 days, so at this point the next step is just to authorize the election.”
