The deadline to enter into the City of Breckenridge public art contest, open to local artists and students, has been extended through the end of October.
Originally set to close Tuesday, Sept. 30, the contest will now accept entries through at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, as announced by the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce.
The initiative was launched by the city in partnership with the chamber, the Breckenridge Downtown Development Council, the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center and with consent of TxDOT. It aims to promote beautification and community pride.
The contest theme is “Celebrate Breckenridge Heritage" and is open to area artists, community members and BISD High School and Junior High students. A $25 entry fee applies to everyone except student participants.
Selected artwork will be displayed on four downtown infrastructure sites for five years, including signalization utility boxes at Hwy 180/Hwy 183, Hwy 183/Court St. and Hwy 180/FM 3099, and the utility rock at Foundation Park.
The prizes for the contest include a $500 scholarship and art displayed at Hwy 180/Court St. for the student entrants and $200, $150 and $100 cash prizes plus art displayed for the community member entrants.
“Get your artwork in, take advantage of the deadline being extended and we will see your artwork beautifying Breckenridge soon,” City Manager Cynthia Northrop said.
Judging will be coordinated by the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center, with panelists to be announced.
Submissions should be delivered to City Hall at 105 North Rose Street, or artists can register online.
