COVID-19 outbreak continues as vaccine come into play

Over the past two weeks, Stephens County has seen a large spike in COVID-19 cases. The county has 54 new cases, an active case count of 5.76 per 1,000 people, 405 total confirmed cases, 227 total probable cases and, 19 deaths.

This data comes from the Texas Department of State Health Services, which tracks the ongoing outbreak of the COVID-19 virus around the state.

On Friday, January 15, Stephens Memorial Hospital update numbers with 89 active cases, and five COVID related hospitalizations.

Although active cases have increased, SMH has vaccinated over 230 citizens and is hoping to continue.

Citizens interested in signing up for the COVID-19 vaccine can do so by contacting Stephens Memorial Hospital District.

Regardless of health-related issues, citizens are encouraged to sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine as the form will go towards setting up appointments for interested citizens.

On the form, citizens will provide their email address, name, date of birth, address, and phone number.

Following this process, citizens will select whether they are in a particular category:

1. healthcare worker or first responder,

2. Phase 1b – Corrections officers, food and agricultural workers, U.S. Postal Service workers, manufacturing workers, grocery store workers, public transit workers, and those who work in the education sector (teachers and support staff members) as well as child care workers, or persons aged ≥75 years;

3. Phase 1c – Workers in transportation and logistics, water and wastewater, food service, shelter and housing (e.g., construction), finance (e.g., bank tellers), information technology and communications, energy, legal, media, and public safety (e.g., engineers), public health workers, persons aged 65-74 years, and persons aged 16-64 years† with medical conditions that increase the risk for severe COVID-19;
