Early voting in runoff election ends Friday

Wed, 05/18/2022 - 12:00 am

Early voting began Monday in the runoff election for the March primaries. A runoff election is held for the Democratic and Republican candidates in which no single candidate earned more than 50% of the vote in the March 1 primary election.

Early voting in the primary runoff election will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, May 20. The deadline to apply for a ballot by mail in the election was Friday, May 13. Early voting will be held at the Stephens County Courthouse.

Election day voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 24. Voting locations on election day will be First National Bank Tower Room, for Precincts 1 and 5; First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, for Precinct 2; Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce, for Precinct 3; and the Breckenridge ISD Bus Barn, for Precinct 4.

The last day to register to vote in the primary runoff election was Monday, April 25. Per state law, voters who cast a ballot in the primary election for a particular party, can only vote in that same party’s primary runoff election.

“In other words, voters cannot switch parties after the main primary election to vote in another party’s primary runoff election,” Texas Secretary of State John B. Scott wrote in a press release in April regarding the runoff. “If you did not cast a ballot in either party’s primary election, you have the option of voting in either party’s primary runoff election.”

On the Republican ballot for Young County will be runoff races for Attorney General, between Ken Paxton and George P. Bush; Commissioner of the General Land Office, between Dawn Buckingham and Tim Westley; and Railroad Commissioner, between Sarah Stogner and Wayne Christian.

On the Democratic ballot for Young County will be runoff races for Lieutenant Governor, between Mike Collier and Michelle Beckley; Attorney General, between Joe Jaworski and Rochelle Mercedes Garza; Comptroller of Public Accounts, between Angel Luis Vega and Janet T. Dudding; and the Commissioner of the General Land Office, between Jay Kleberg and Sandragrace Martinez.

Following the election on May 24, the winners in each party’s primary elections will be that party’s nominee in the upcoming general election Nov. 8. Early voting in the Nov. 8 election will begin Oct. 24 and will run through Nov. 4. The last day to register to vote in the November election is Oct. 11.
