Breckenridge East Elementary has its first week under its belt for its new pick-up and drop-off plan, following a rough initial week of the previous new plan to start the 2025-2026 school year.
The new plan began Monday, Aug. 11 and was much safer for the students and teachers as the pick-up did not force them to cross the road as the initial plan had.
Breckenridge ISD Superintendent Prairie Freeman described that she felt much better about the pick-up plan during the first week of implementation. She noted that they have just been working on getting better time-wise, and will continue to strive for improvement.
The enforcement of the traffic continues to be done by the Breckenridge Police Department, led by Chief Blake Johnson. The pick-up was complete and police officers were clear by about 4:26 p.m. the first day of the plan.
Johnson said they have been finishing up with pick-ups by around 4:20 p.m. each day of the new plan so far, which he noted was option two that they had on the table prior to the school year starting. Johnson described how the timing isn’t always everything, as safety is most important.
“Safer is better,” Johnson said.
The routes were the same for drop-offs and pick-ups in the afternoon per the new plan that was released via a map on the East Elementary Facebook page Friday, Aug. 8. Vehicles were advised to enter off of the Industrial Loop, driving west through the drive-through in front of the school.
Vehicles lined up in a single-file line along the Industrial Loop on the west side of the street, heading south and the line extends to the north on the loop.
“They (enforcement, BISD) debriefed after [pick-ups] and worked on coming up with new ideas to make it smoother and faster,” Freeman said. “But I am very happy that students and staff are off the highway.”
