Gag order put on double homicide investigation

Wed, 12/26/2018 - 12:00 am

The 90th Judicial District has approved a gag order regarding the double homicide that rocked Breckenridge nearly two weeks ago. The order forbids any official or witness from making statements to the public or giving information out until the case is closed, according to the order.

The reasons for the order stem from a “serious and imminent threat to the integrity of the judicial process,” according to the order. In short, the court has ruled that any information given out prior to the completion of the investigation could jeopardize its findings or process.

Specifically, the order states no official or witness will be able to give information regarding witnesses, the investigation and any information about evidence found.

In response to this order, the Breckenridge American will be limited in what information it will be able to provide as the investigation continues. Though, it should be noted that the order does not limit any person or outlet from making statements, meaning media will still have the ability to report anything that can be found out.

The Breckenridge American has also filed an open records request for documents pertaining to the case and are expected to receive those when the case is finished. We will report on the information found in those documents when they are received. We will also continue to provide updates on this case as they become available, while still respecting the investigative process.
