A senior at Woodson High School, Brody Mathiews, has interests outside the classroom. He has found a sport he truly loves and has put in many hours of practice and it has paid off.

Mathiews has again qualified for the Junior World Finals, to be held this week, in Las Vegas, Nev. He will be roping both as a header and a heeler in the national competition, for which he qualified for earlier this fall.

Practice consists of almost daily roping of live steers, either at home or at friends’ arenas, and entering roping events on the weekends. He and his partner met at their scheduled qualifying events and earned their way to Vegas.

Roping is not just climbing on a horse and throwing a loop. The responsibilities that Mathiews takes on include caring for his horses and keeping them healthy, making sure they are hauled safely, and being mature enough to devote the necessary time to practice and preparation, along with keeping his grades up at school.

Mathiews remains humble through his many accomplishments. He just wants to enjoy roping and be successful as long as he can.

He is thankful for the support of his parents and family and friends who help make this sport possible for him.
