All athletes medal, Bucks place 2nd overall at state track meet

Five Breckenridge Buckaroos competed in the UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin last weekend, medaling in three out of four events and finishing in second place overall.

The Bucks finished with 33 points, behind Brock High School’s 55 points.

“I am very proud of these young men and the way they represented Breckenridge at the meet and the whole time we were in Austin. The future is bright for Buckaroo Track! Thank you to all of you who supported us over the last few months and for all the encouraging words given this whole time,” Breckenridge High School Coach Mark Young said in a report.

Chase Lehr, a BHS junior, brought home a gold medal in the 800-meter dash, with a time of 1:55.41. Lehr finished more than two seconds faster than the second place runner (1:57.44).

The Bucks’ 4x200-meter relay team finished in second place, bringing home a silver medal. The team, which includes Adrian Ruiz, Daniel Valdez (senior), Sawyer Wimberley (freshman), and Sean Cooksey, finished with a time of 1:28.22, less than one second behind the first place team (1:27.33).

The team beat their personal record, which was set at the regional track meet, of 1:28.52 by three-tenths of a second.

Also medaling was BHS junior Sean Cooksey, who brought home a bronze in the 100-meter dash. Cooksey finished with a time of 10.68 seconds, less than half a second behind the first place runner.

Adrian Ruiz, a BHS junior, finished in sixth place in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 22.11 seconds.

With four out of the five athletes returning next year, the Buckaroos are poised to have a promising 2023 track season.
