A Breckenridge man was found guilty last week of a cattle theft incident dating back to early July. The man was given a sentence of deferred adjudication and community supervision.

Jonathon David Berry, 45, was arrested on Thursday, July 5, in connection to cattle thefts in the southern portion of Stephens County. The cattle that were stolen belonged to Steven Moorman and neighbor Kessa Compton also of Breckenridge.

Back in July, the Breckenridge American reported on cattle theft involving Berry, who is a resident of Breckenridge.

Honorable Judge Stephen Bristow presided over the guilty plea on Oct. 18. Berry was given a sentence of deferred adjudication and community supervision for a period of four years. He is also responsible for fines and court costs in the amount of $1,053, along with restitution to Moorman and Compton in the amount of $9,100. Berry’s attorney, David Wimberly, said if he completes the deferred adjudication, he will be eligible to ask for a dismissal. This gives him the ability to vote and legally possess a firearm. However, if he does not complete it or other charges arise, then he would have the possibility of receiving years in prison on this case. Moorman and Compton are relatives of Berry and chose restitution in lieu of prosecution.
