National Weather Service to offer free weather training class

Wed, 01/30/2019 - 12:00 am

The National Weather Service will be offering a free severe weather training session at 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8 at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, according to a release from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The training session, called a SKYWARN storm spotter class, will be geared towards helping its attendees understand the serious threats that come with a thunderstorm, as well as characteristics and features associated with such storms, the release states. It will also have an emphasis on storm safety and how to properly report weather events to any local, state or national weather service.

The class is in partnership with Stephens County Emergency Management and is free of charge. No registration is required to attend. This program will be one of 40 training sessions conducted by the Fort Worth National Weather Service Office between January and March 2019.

“I am excited that the NWS is offering this class to our community,” Stephens County Judge Michael Roach stated in an email. “As the Emergency Management Director for Stephens County, I urge all interested citizens to attend.”
