Although the COVID-19 pandemic halted many activities in Stephens County, the virus wasn’t able to stop the Breckenridge High school Class of 2020.
BHS celebrated the class Saturday, June 6, inside the newly renovated Buckaroos Stadium. Sitting six feet apart, students, parents, faculty and staff celebrated together on the accomplishments of the Breckenridge Buckaroos.
Graduation wasn’t the only event occurring at Buckaroos Stadium on Saturday morning. Multiple students were awarded scholarships paying out hundreds of thousands of dollars to students on their future endeavors.
Students stood and were met with applauds by friends and family as BISD honored students with the awards.
Led by Breckenridge Principal William Paul, the ceremony began with a drone photo of graduates from the sky. The innovative move captured students on their special day and immortalized the 2020 Class.
The audience listened as Liberty Blades, the Class of 2020 Salutatorian and soon to be University of Colorado student, provided students with words of encouragement for the future.
“I want each of you to stand up for what you believe in and for what is right,” Blades said. “I believe for all of you, those are the same thing. This movement we are apart of will and are witnessing will be history. If you want to see a change, create a change, create a movement. When you see something wrong happening around you, do something, do not turn away. Use your voice to make a difference. Injustices are happening around us, everyday constantly and too many people do nothing. Our generation can and will be different, When we were young, it was instilled in us to treat everyone the same and that should be our mindset a decade later, it shouldn’t change as adults. Everyone deserves kindness.”
Following the powerful words of Liberty Blades, citizens in attendance heard from the Axel Puebla, the Class of 2020 Valedictorian, who also encouraged students on the future. Puebla will be attending the University of Texas in the fall.
“I want to congratulate my peers for enduring these past 14 years of classwork,” Puebla said. “It has been a long time coming and we are at the point we have been admiring since we were kids. You all deserve this and have worked hard for this. Cherish this moment and enjoy it with your family as life is a one time show. I know you will all make a difference in this world for the better. I’m proud to graduate alongside each one of you today.”
Following the speeches by the two students, newly installed Superintendent Bryan Allen thanked the community for the support and love for the Breckenridge ISD Class of 2020.
The ceremony concluded with the singing of the school song as the pupils sung for the last time as high school students.
