Police release names and photos of suspects arrested following drug investigation

UPDATE

City, county, state, area and federal law enforcement officers converged on several locations in Breckenridge and Stephens County this morning, June 29, to serve indictments and make arrests following a 2½-year drug investigation. The investigation resulted in 17 sealed indictments, and by Wednesday afternoon a total of 13 arrests had been made, eight during the operation and five who were already in custody.

In a statement released by the Breckenridge Police Department, the investigation into illegal drug use started in October 2014 when the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department was assisting the Breckenridge Police Department with an undercover operation of illegal game rooms in and around Breckenridge.

According to the statement, while working the game room investigation, the agents were approached to purchase illegal drugs, and that triggered the drug investigation.

Breckenridge Police Chief Larry Mahan said since there is no longer a drug task force, the Breckenridge Police Department worked in a joint operation with the 90th District Attorney’s Office, the Taylor County Sherriff’s Department and the DEA under a Memo of Understanding that gave the Taylor County investigators jurisdiction to work in Stephens County.

In the investigation, which was coordinated by Breckenridge Police officer Bacel Cantrell, the money used to buy the drugs in the undercover operation was provided by Stephens County Attorney Gary Trammel’s office.

Mahan said the investigation was aimed at street-level drug use and selling in the area.

“We start with the people who are selling it around town,” Mahan said. “Nobody is making a fortune around town off selling drugs because they’re using it as much as they’re selling. But, it’s taking us other places. That’s the reason the DEA is involved, is because it has taken us other places and going toward bigger and better things.”

Other agencies that assisted in Wednesday morning’s operations were the Stephens County Sheriff’s Department, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, U.S. Marshals Office, Stephens County Probation Office and Texas Department of Criminal Justice Parole Division.
