Rodeo arena to be rebuilt

Tue, 07/16/2019 - 1:18 pm

The Stephens County Rodeo Arena is going to be rebuilt after the rodeo board secured almost half of the money needed from the Stephens County Commissioners Court. With details of the arena getting ironed out and plans being set, the board will continue to fundraise and are aiming for a launch date in fall of this year.

Mike Herrington, the treasurer for the rodeo board, said the decision was made because of the state of the current rodeo arena. He described it as rundown and in need of repair, as the condition not only prevents the arena from hosting several events each year, but has become borderline dangerous for participants.

In looking at potential options, Herrington said they will be able to get a newly built arena for less than $90,000. The board has about half the money — around $43,000 in total — needed to pull off the rebuild. Of the total money they have, $35,000 is coming from Stephens County, after a measure was approved at their July 8 meeting that will see the county give half of their unclaimed property capital credits to the rodeo board.
