In late August, Breckenridge FFA member and Pride of Breckenridge band member Rylee Fuller qualified for the National FFA Band. She will represent Breckenridge FFA playing trumpet on the big stage in October, performing during the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The convention & expo takes place Monday, Oct. 29 through Wednesday, Nov. 1 at the Indiana Convention Center.
The application process for the National FFA Band opened in mid-April and closed Friday, July 18, which had four components: written application, video audition, advisor approval and a $40 non-refundable application fee.
Audition requirements for woodwinds and brass are:
Step 1 – Slowly announce your name and state.
Step 2 – Repeat your name, and then give your instrument.
Step 3 – Begin playing the Chromatic scale (as many octaves as you can play it).
Step 4 – Play the major scale of your choice.
Step 5 – Play a solo and/or technical study to determine your skills.
The instructions for recorded auditions also included a sample audition video to give students an idea of how it should go.
In addition to the band, the convention and expo also features chorus and other talent. The National FFA Band and Chorus feature musically talented FFA members from across the nation. The National FFA Talent is a separate event for showcasing any talents from FFA members.
Applicants were notified of their status by Thursday, Aug. 21, after state staff reviewed all applications to verify that all requirements were met and National FFA directors then reviewed those applicants approved by their state.
National FFA Band members will receive their music once they arrive on-site and learn all the music together in Indianapolis, according to the information packet.
“This is an incredible honor and opportunity, and we couldn’t be more excited to see her showcase her talent while representing our chapter, school and community at the national level,” the Breckenridge FFA said. “Way to go, Rylee! Your hard work, dedication, and passion make us all proud to be Buckaroos!”
