Statewide Sales Tax Holidays are being held through Monday for water-efficient and Energy Star products.
Both holidays are being held from Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25, with the Texas Comptroller’s office estimating shoppers will save approximately $15.7 million in state and local sales taxes during the holidays.
“Texans know the value of a dollar, and every opportunity to keep more money in the hands of families and businesses matters,” Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock said. “These sales tax holidays help Texans make practical purchases that can lower costs, conserve resources and stretch household budgets a little further.”
Products displaying a WaterSense label or logo can be purchased tax free for personal or business use, such as showerheads, bathroom sink faucets and fixtures and landscape irrigation controls.
Other eligible products eligible for the exemption for residential use include soakers or drip-irrigation hoses, mulch, rain barrels, plants, trees, grasses, soil and compressed and permeable ground cover surface that allows water to reach underground basins, aquifers or water collection points.
Examples of items that do not qualify are construction and building materials, awnings and other items used to create shade and sprinklers.
Products displaying the Energy Star logo can be purchased tax free, including air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less, refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less, ceiling fans, fluorescent light bulbs, dishwashers, dehumidifiers and clothes washers.
Examples of items that do not qualify are water heaters, clothes dryers, freezers, stoves, attic fans, heat pumps, wine refrigerators, kegerators and beverage chillers.
During the holiday residents can buy qualifying products in-store, online, by phone, mail, or other means.
“If you pay sales tax on these items during the sales tax holiday, you can ask the seller for a refund of the tax paid. The seller can either grant the refund or provide their customer with Form 00-985, Assignment of Right to Refund, which allows the purchaser to file the refund claim directly with the comptroller’s office,” the comptroller’s office said in release.
