Stephens Memorial Hospital will soon have an interim CEO, and begin searching for a permanent replacement, following the recent resignation of Brian Roland.

Following a special called meeting earlier this month, the SMH board accepted Roland’s resignation.

The outgoing CEO informed the hospital of his departure at the end of October.

Roland was hired by SMH in February 2021. Prior to coming to Breckenridge, Roland served as the CEO at Muenster Memorial Hospital for just over five years.

After more than two decades in the healthcare sector, almost 13 years of that spent in Texas, Roland plans to continue serving at a hospital in northeast New Mexico.

“I am pleased to know I am leaving SMH in a strong position,” Roland said. “There is a sturdy foundation we have built as the district moves forward.”

Roland continued, touting some of the accomplishments during his tenure.

“We have worked on quality, compliance, policies and procedures along with an updated HR module,” he said. “Employee turnover has continued to decrease. The facilities look great and we have updated equipment and computers. We have a wonderful senior leadership team and the board has truly gelled. Our yearend financials look the best they have in the last five years. Hospital volumes continue to increase. We have worked hard to ensure the staff are paid at market rates and we have all but eliminated the cost of insurance increases for employees....”

At the same special called meeting, the board signed a contract with TORCH Management Services, Inc. (TMSI) to begin searching for Roland’s replacement.

The board will work with TMSI to set potential candidate criteria. Once resumes are received, TMSI will begin screening candidates prior to interviews.

Roland said that the interim CEO would begin Monday, Dec. 2, with his last day set for Friday, Dec. 6.

“I am excited for the future of SMHD and all (they) can do for healthcare in Stephens County,” Roland said. “I will work with the board as they desire on the transition.”
