(File Photo) Stephens Memorial Hospital has informed Breckenridge residents that there is an ongoing phone scam in which their number is being used by scammers to solicit personal information from individuals.

Stephens Memorial Hospital is urging residents to stay vigilant following reports of a phone scam that falsely uses the hospital’s number to solicit sensitive personal information.

According to a news release sent out by the hospital Tuesday, Sept. 16, scammers were using a tactic known as “caller ID spoofing” to make it appear as though calls were coming from the hospital.

During these calls, individuals were falsely told they were speaking with hospital representatives and were asked to provide personal details such as Social Security numbers and disability-related information.
Hospital administrators emphasized that Stephen Memorial will never request Social Security, banking information or disability records over the phone.

“If you receive a call like this, do not share any personal information and hang up immediately,” the hospital said in the release. “If you’re unsure whether a call is legitimate, you can always hang up and call us directly at 254-559-2241.”

The hospital stressed its commitment to patient privacy and community safety, and encouraged anyone who believes they’ve been targeted by the scam to report to the Federal Trade Commission. Reports can be filed online at reportfraud.ftc.gov or by calling 1-877-382-4357.

“Thank you for helping us protect our community from fraudulent activity,” the statement concluded.
