This year’s State Fair of Texas will soon kick off in Dallas and Stephens County 4-H will have representation, with one team and one individual competing in events.
The State Fair of Texas begins Friday, Sept. 26 and goes through Sunday, Oct. 19 at Fair Park in Dallas.
The plant identification team of Chloe Tait, Kason Burchett and Josiah Moreno will compete in the Plant ID contest taking place Saturday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m.
Coached by Jerry Corbett, the team is coming off a win at the 4-H State Roundup at Texas A&M University this summer.
Check-in for the contest begins at 8 a.m. at the Briscoe Carpenter Livestock Center.
The individual who is competing is Sylee Mitchell, a junior at Breckenridge High School who is very active in 4-H and Breckenridge FFA, serving as vice president of both clubs. Mitchell also serves on both the county and district 4-H councils and was elected District 3 4-H parliamentarian earlier this year.
Mitchell will be showing one market wether and two wether does.
The market goats show takes place Monday, Sept. 29 at 8 a.m. at the Livestock Judging Pavilion, with the check-in deadline Sunday, Sept. 28 by 1 p.m. The weather doe and weather dam show, meanwhile, will take place Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 8 a.m. at the Swine Barn.
“One of the wether does I will be exhibiting at the State Fair of Texas I have raised myself. This little doe went to her first show last weekend and won reserve grand champion wether doe,” Mitchell said. “Her dam (mom) was one of my first bottle babies, so it’s been really cool to see her kid go in the ring and immediately do great things.”
