Stephens County voters elected a new county commissioner and received the outcome of various other races. Texas residents elected the candidates for Texas House District 60 and Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate and Texas Railroad Commission during the July primary election.

Early voting by personal appearance began on Monday, June 29, and over 800 citizens, including mail-in voters, chose their particular candidate.

David Fambro will replace Ed Russell as county commissioner for Stephens County Commissioners Precinct one.

The early voting tally for the Stephens County commissioner had David Fambro with a lead over Chad Ezell, 134-74.

The total tally saw Fambro win the election with 252 to Ezell’s 126 votes.

The race headed into a runoff after Fambro receiving 30.11 percent of the Precinct 1 votes and Chad Ezell receiving 19.52 percent of the votes during the March primary election.

The runoff election also selected the Republican nominees for the Texas House District 60, and the Democratic candidate facing John Cornyn for the U.S. Senator seat.

In the county, Glenn Rogers beat candidate Jon Francis with 882 votes to 453, Rogers led Francis after early voting in the county with 489 votes to 305.

Rogers also defeated Francis in the district-wide election by a small margin of 51.5% to 48.5%. The final tally was extremely competitive with Rogers receiving 11,956 votes to Francis’ 11,278 votes.

The win for Rogers is a change from the March elections as Francis received 46 percent of district votes and Rogers received nearly 44 percent.

With no Democratic candidate in the race, Rogers will replace retiring state representative Mike Lang as the District 60 state representative.

The Democratic nominee facing U.S. Senator John Cornyn in the November election for U.S. Senate was also on the ballot.

Mary “MJ” Hegar faced incumbent Royce West in the election and the two tied in Stephens County 22-22. In the state-wide election, Hegar edged West, winning with 52.1% of the votes to West’s 47.9%.

Hegar will face incumbent John Cornyn in the November election for a seat on the U.S. Senate.

Hegar finished first in the March Primaries with 22 percent of the statewide votes, and West finished in second place with nearly 15 percent causing the runoff.

Also on the ballot was a Democratic position for the Texas Railroad Commission. A battle between Chrysta Castaneda and Robert Alonzo occurred to determine who will represent the Democratic party against Republican nominee James Wright in November. Wright defeated the incumbent Ryan Sitton in the March primaries.

In the county, Castaneda beat Alonzo with a 28- 16 vote tally. In the statewide election, Castaneda defeated Alonzo with a 62 % to 38% victory. Castaneda will face Wright for a spot on the Railroad Commission in the November General Election.
