Thompson takes county judge race, Wade retains commissioner seat

Will Thompson will run on the ballot in November as county judge alongside Precinct 4 Commissioner Tanner Wade after winning their races in the Republican primary.

Early voting was held from Tuesday, Feb. 17 through Friday, Feb. 27. Election day voting closed Tuesday, March 3.

Current Stephens County Judge Michael Roach has retained his seat since running unopposed in the 2018 primary election and November general election. Roach announced last year he would not be seeking reelection.

Thompson and candidate Bacel Cantrell were running for the county judge seat in the Republican primary. Thompson came out on top in the primary with 1,291 votes, while Cantrell had 488 votes.

Wade was the incumbent to the precinct 4 seat and was running against opponent Donald Perry. A total of 421 voters within precinct 4 cast their vote for Wade, while 104 voters chose Perry.

The last local contested Republican primary race was for county constable with candidates Brian McBride and Justin Shockley. McBride was appointed last year following the passing of former constable Wayne McMullen.

Shockley won the race with 1,106 votes, while McBride received 512 votes. 

Other county officials running unopposed in the primary were County Clerk Jackie Ensey, County Treasurer Kelsey Cornwall, Justice of the Peace Steve Spoon, County Commissioner, Precinct 2 Mark McCullough and District Clerk Stephanie Elder.

Stephens County Republican Chair Scott Harris was the solo candidate to file for that position while no candidates filed for the Stephens County Democratic Chair position.

All results released are unofficial until being officially verified by the Stephens County Election office.
