The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission will be voting next week to acquire approximately 2,850 acres of land in Stephens County for a new wildlife management area.

TPW Commission adopted policies and rules for programs of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).

The commission will consider the acquisition during a meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 26 at commission Hearing Room at 4200 Smith School Road in Austin.

The meeting can be accessed via livestream, or by phone by calling 888-978-8818 and using the access code 8201869#.

The action item will be to request permission to acquire 2,850 acres of land in Stephens County approximately 10 miles northeast of Breckenridge from a seller for a new wildlife management area.

“The property proposed for acquisition consists of approximately 2,850 acres, including native wildlife habitat and flat to rolling hills,” the commission discussion item states. “Staff believes this property is suitable for a new wildlife management area, and acquisition will expand the wildlife management area footprint in the northwest region of Texas and provide habitat protection and new public recreational opportunities, including hunting.”

The agenda item states that staff will recommend the commission authorize the executive director to acquire the county land. Online comments are being accepted regarding the land acquisition at tpwd.texas.gov through 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25.

According to the discussion item, the commission works to acquire wildlife management areas from willing sellers to help improve public recreational opportunities, conserve fish and wildlife habitats and ensure conservation of existing TPWD public lands.

“Acquisition of this property will add a new wildlife management area to TPWD’s public land system and provide greater outdoor experiences and opportunities for the citizens of Texas,” the item states.
