This Memorial Day weekend one Breckenridge community member is continuing an annual tradition to honor those who have died while serving in the U.S. military.
Jim Merson, with the assistance of Stephens County Veterans Service Officer Les Strickland, are seeking volunteers to place flags at the graves of fallen service members at Breckenridge Cemetery. The pair will begin 8 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at 8 a.m at 1301 E. Elliott St.
“Traditionally we have between 20 and 30 volunteers arrive,” Merson said. “(We) are finished dressing the cemetery in a little over an hour, perhaps an hour and a half. This year Breckenridge will be hosting the air show …(and) there may be a late plane or two fly over the cemetery on its approach to the airport.”
Volunteers are asked to show up at the cemetery. Community members wishing to volunteer are reminded to wear comfortable shoes and clothing due to the weather.
Flag pickup will be Sunday, May 26 at 5 p.m.
