Voting ends in low turnout runoff

Voting ended last Tuesday in the runoff election for the March primaries with a low local turnout in Stephens County. A runoff election was held for the Democratic and Republican candidates in which no single candidate earned more than 50% of the vote in the March 1 primary election.

According to the Texas Secretary of State unofficial results, 1,023 votes were cast between the runoff elections, or 18.2% of the 5,629 total registered voters in the county.

The winners in each party’s primary elections will be that party’s nominee in the upcoming general election Tuesday, Nov. 8. Early voting in the Nov. 8 election will begin Monday, Oct. 24 and will run through Friday, Nov. 4. The last day to register to vote in the November election is Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Republican results

On the Republican ballot for Stephens County were runoff races for Attorney General, between incumbent Ken Paxton and George P. Bush; Commissioner of the General Land Office, between Dawn Buckingham and Tim Westley; Railroad Commissioner, between Sarah Stogner and incumbent Wayne Christian; and State Rep. District 60, between Mike Olcott and Incumbent Glenn Rogers.

Statewide, Paxton received 630,064 votes, or 67.96% of the total votes, while Bush received 297,025 votes, or 32.04% of the total votes for the position of Attorney General, according to the Texas Secretary of State unofficial results. Locally, Paxton received 738 votes, while Bush received 268 votes.

Buckingham received 592,683 votes, or 68.79% of the total statewide votes, while Westley received 268,914 votes, or 31.21% of the total statewide votes. Locally, Buckingham received 636 votes, while Westley received 282 votes.

Statewide, Christian received 571,705 votes, or 65.04% of the total votes, while Stogner received 307,258 votes, or 34.96% of the total votes for the position of Railroad Commissioner. Locally, Christian received 743 votes, while Stogner received 188 votes.

Across District 60, Olcott received 8,509 votes, or 47.88% of the total votes, while Rogers received 9,261 votes, or 52.12% of the total votes. Locally, Olcott received 284 votes and Rogers received 731 votes.

Democratic results

On the Democratic ballot for Stephens County were runoff races for Lieutenant Governor, between Mike Collier and Michelle Beckley; Attorney General, between Joe Jaworski and Rochelle Mercedes Garza; Comptroller of Public Accounts, between Angel Luis Vega and Janet T. Dudding; and the Commissioner of the General Land Office, between Jay Kleberg and Sandragrace Martinez.

Statewide, Collier received 263,503 votes, or 54.79% of the total votes, while Beckley received 217,398 votes, or 45.21% of the total votes for the position of Lieutenant Governor, according to the Texas Secretary of State unofficial results. Locally, Collier received 13 votes, while Beckley received 3 votes.

Garza received 303,386 votes, or 62.72% of the total votes, while Jaworski received 180,339 votes, or 37.28% of the total vote for the position of Attorney General. Locally, Garza received 10 votes, while Jaworski received 7 votes.

Statewide, Dudding received 290,088 votes, or 61.4% of the total votes, while Vega received 182,404 votes, or 38.6% of the total votes for the position of Comptroller of Public Accounts. Locally, Dudding received 13 votes, while Vega received 3 votes.

Kleberg received 252,420 votes, or 52.91% of the total votes, while Martinez received 224,689 votes, or 47.09% of the total votes for the position of Commissioner of the General Land Office. Locally, Kleberg received 11 votes, while Martinez received 7 votes.
