The Woodson News: Does History Repeat Itself?

Wed, 01/06/2021 - 5:00 am

The question was posed by a TV reporter, “What is one way you can describe the year 2020?” The answers came, “a devastating year, like no other;” “a year of hatred,” or “a year of disease.” The negative answers continued.

I answer the question differently. I answer it that 2020 was just like any other year. There were births and new lives. There were deaths. There was illness but there were also new strides in healthcare. People moved and bought new homes. Papers received new editors. Animals entered our lives, and animals left our lives. New friends were made. It rained, it snowed, it was windy, it was calm, it was dry. Each year brings events, each year brings change and experience to our lives. There is no set agenda for a year. Nor, is there any for a month or a day. Not one second is guaranteed or prophesied. This past year there were tears and there was laughter. Prayers were offered. Prayers were answered. No year is like any other; in that, they are all the same.

The Throckmorton County Livestock Show will take place this weekend. The exhibitors met Sunday to clean the barn and set up pens. There will be livestock and there will be concessions, there will be shows and there will be sales. Covid protocol is suggested. Come out and watch the kids! The show begins Saturday at 8 AM sharp! They need your continued support. If you wish to donate, it can be done at the stock show or please mail it to TCJLS, c/o Tacy Ellis, 427 S US Hwy 183, Woodson, TX 76491. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed.

Stock show clean up will be on Sunday, January 10, at 2 PM. ALL exhibitors are expected to be there.

Check Facebook for our basketball game schedule. I do know that the high school plays Perrin, at home on Friday, January 8, at 6 PM for the girls and at 7:30 PM for the boys.

Our prayer list is large. Alene Forrest had to make an emergency trip to Abilene, but has done well and has been moved into a rehab facility for a few days. Aletha Creech was in and out of the hospital after testing positive for Covid19 and is undergoing treatment. My niece, Emily Carpenter, 39, experienced something like a heart attack, but she will be okay after her defibrillator is installed. Sarah Ellis lost her dog, Shiner, 11 years, after he suffered a brief illness. Thora and Paul Thurn, Pam Allen, Ray Lipps, Pig McWhorter, Ron and Vicki Saddler, Earlene Bellah, Dale Deaton, Sr., Ada Smith, and June and Arliss all remain on our list. (Psst, Treon, I am still praying for you.)

Zoee Carruthers won the Farm Bureau speech contest recently! More when I know more!

The first month of the year is a great one for birthdays! Kolton Bellah, Pat Hibbitts, Drew Ellis, Janet Sullivan, April, Otis Hibbitts, Bonnie Siebert, little Kaiser Mathiews, Dusty O’Dell, Julianna Miller, Gary Hagle, Richard Sullivan, Seth Brockman, Rhonda Brockman, Earlene Bellah, Roni Mills, Floren O’Dell and Resa Deaton all celebrate their birthdays in January.

We lost an original “Woodsonite” on New Year’s Day. Tommy Trimble passed away. Tommy was a Woodson graduate and the youngest son of Lilian and John Trimble. He was a weatherman. More than that, he was our favorite uncle. He never came to a family gathering that he didn’t bring the Dublin Dr. Pepper. Uncle Tom Trimble was a true gentle man. He was kind and happy. He was generous with love and good will. He had been living in the Stephenville area and his children and grandchildren were with him when he passed. A fitting honor for a wonderful man. Services were held Thursday, Jan. 7 at Cottonwood Baptist Church, near Dublin.

The Mayor was spotted this week. He stated his latest observation: “If a spoon falls from your hand at the table, it will go all the way to the floor and slide all the way under and to the middle of the table.” Somehow, he associated the inability to retrieve the hypothetical spoon with age.

No matter where your spoon lands, I wish you a Happy New Year. The best is yet to be.
