Stephens County Commissioners keep burn ban on, discuss financial items

The burn ban was kept on by the Stephens County Commissioners court during their regular meeting on Monday, March 11. They also discussed various financial items, including the status of grants requested for the pending capital case.

Also at the meeting was the public hearing regarding the uniform speed limit, which was ultimately passed during the meeting as well. For more information on this, check out the March 13 and the March 6 edition of the Breckenridge American.

boil water notice in effect March 12

A boil water notice for North Baylor to North Pecan and West 2nd Street to the north end of the system was put in place Tuesday, March 12, according to a release from city officials.

Due to a water line break from construction, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the system to notify all customers within the specified block to boil their water for at least two minutes prior to consumption, according to the release.

Rotary Club hosts blood drive

About 16 pints were collected at this quarter’s blood drive, hosted by the Rotary Club of Breckenridge with Carter Bloodcare at the First National Bank on Thursday, March 7.

Samantha Kruse, a mobile supervisor for Carter, said they take a pint of blood from donors, but this can vary depending on several factors, such as the donor’s health, how long it takes them to donate or whether they are able to physically do so.

City commissioners pass ordinance on sexual offenders, approve bid contract for U.S. 183 project

An ordinance that would limit where sexual offenders can live within the city was passed at the Breckenridge City Commissioners’ monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 5.

The ordinance went through its first reading in their February meeting, but due to the fine it would impose, was required to have two separate readings. The meeting on Tuesday acted as its second reading.

County commissioners to hold public hearing for uniform speed limit on county roads

Those traveling with a leadfoot on Stephens County roads may soon have to ­find the brakes, as the county court is considering a uniform speed limit of 30 mph for select county roads.

The county commissioners will hold a public hearing at 9 a.m. Monday, March 11 to receive comment from residents on the proposed change. These actions come a couple months after the county briefly discussed the concept in their­ first January meeting, as well as after what of­ officials called numerous complaints from residents.

The Stephens County County Commissioners met Monday, Feb. 25 for their regular meeting and implemented a burn ban, as well as discussed several grants the county is eligible for as they gear up to figure the costs of the potential capital trial coming to the area.

Former Breckenridge band director arrested for solicitation of minor

A former Breckenridge ISD employee was arrested earlier this month after trying to meet a 13-year-old boy online, according to officials. The arrest was made in Dallas County.

James Cude, who was the Breckenridge Junior High and High School band director from 2000 to 2002, was arrested on Wednesday, Feb. 6 in connection with a joint task force that was comprised of both Dallas County law enforcement and federal investigators.

Breckenridge American burglarized

Breckenridge American's newsroom was ransacked and burglarized between Thursday night and Friday morning, Feb. 21-22.

An employee of the paper arrived Friday morning and discovered the scene. The Breckenridge Police Department was called shortly after. Included at the scene was debris, broken glass and missing items. The BPD began taking notes and gathering information after they arrived.

Boil water notice effective Feb. 20

A boil water notice for the 1000 and 1100 blocks of North Parks on the east side of the street was put into effect on Wednesday, Feb. 20, according to a release from the city.
