After the initial storm there were remnants of large, cardboard boxes at the city park as a means to improvise as a sled to sled downhill. These kids participated in the traditional slide down the hill at the City Park that has been part of their parents’ lives and a generational ‘must’ for their children. As cold weather hits Stephens County and throughout the state into this week, Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for all 254 counties in response to the weather impacting the state. The state deployed resources to local officials to assist in their response efforts.

SCSO request for new patrol vehicle

During the Stephens County Commissioners Court meeting, Sheriff Kevin Roach requested that the court consider providing the initial funding for a new vehicle to replace one that is in consistent need of repair. Sheriff Roach discussed options with the commissioners, including obtaining grant money, a state program that offers a significant discount on the base price for law enforcement, and leasing a vehicle. The commissioners approved the motion to provide the upfront funding with the expecta tion of recouping most of the initial investment.

DSHS distributes vaccines for tenth week to providers

The Texas Department of State Health Services tasked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ship 407,650 first doses of COVID-19 vaccines to 302 providers during the tenth week of COVID-19 vaccine distribution. Aside from large vaccine hubs, additional vaccines are still being distributed to smaller providers in other parts of the state including Stephens County.

Next on the agenda of the trial was the testimony of E.R. Maxwell, who was well-known as a community leader, in Breckenridge, and was named as one of the directors of the Stephens County Museum. Maxwell said, “I was shocked like I had never been before that the two sisters were unhappy about the dealings with the museum organization.” Maxwell went on to say, “I had made as many as 20 visits to the Swenson home and I never recalled any controversy or dissatisfaction over any of the plans for the museum until I received the phone call that said the two sisters had filed a petition with the court.”

COVID-19 vaccine pace rises while statewide hospitalizations drop

The number of people in Texas hospitalized with COVID-19 has declined more than 28 percent in the past month, according to the Texas Department of Health Services. As of Feb. 7, Texas hospitals were treating 9,957 COVID-19 patients, down from nearly 14,000 a month ago. The number of new cases in the past week was 123,239 — a 22 percent drop from the record high of 158,922 the week of Jan. 10, according to the Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University.
