BISD creates committee to address dress code

The Breckenridge Independent School District Board of Directors President Jeff Dooley appointed a board sub-committee to review and make changes to current student dress code policies.

BISD Superintendent Tim Seymore, said the parent’s request for the board to consider an issue with the dress code prompted this discussion at the board’s meeting last month.

BPD officers arrest two alleged methamphetamine dealers

The Breckenridge Police Department spearheaded two investigations leading to the arrest of two alleged methamphetamine dealers.

Breckenridge Police Lieutenant Bacel Cantrell came into contact with both Roger Dale Norman Jr., 41 of Breckenridge, and Barbara Kay Horneck of Albany, in two separate incidents, which both led to arrests.

Urgent care clinic delayed, staff, procedures plans in place

The Stephens Memorial Hospital board may have delayed plans to open an urgent care/after hours clinic in 2017, but plans for the clinic became more concrete during last Thursday’s board meeting.

The urgent care/after hours clinic was originally planned to open sometime this month, but officials overseeing the project suggested the board push those plans back in order to have a strong foundation for when the clinic opens in 2018.

Beauchamp faces multiple child sexual assault charges

A 28-year-old Breckenridge man remains jailed on more than $300,000 bond following multiple charges related to child sexual assault.

Eric Beauchamp of Breckenridge is in Stephens County Jail on felony charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault, following an investigation by the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office that began in late August.

Sloan Everett Memorial Bike Ride set for Saturday

The Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce will host the Sloan Everett Memorial Bike Ride and tree dedication starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. 

The tree dedication will take place at Miller Park, and will be located at the Disc Golf Pavilion, behind the American Legion building.

After the tree dedication ceremony, the bike ride segment will commence with three levels of participation. 

County commissioners approve indigent defense grant program

The Stephens County Commissioner’s Court approved a resolution continuing its participation in the Texas Indigent Defense Grant Program for 2018 during its meeting last Tuesday.

The Texas Indigent Defense Commission administrates the grant annually to support counties’ indigent defense programs, which help citizens who lack sufficient income to afford a defense attorney.

“It’s to help us cover expenses we have to pay for court-appointed attorneys and for their expenses and their defense,” Stephens County Assistant Treasurer Mary O’Dell said.

Stephens County jury finds Blair innocent of murder

After eight and a half hours of deliberation, a Stephens County jury found Elton “E.C.” Carroll Blair of Graham not guilty for the murder of 22-year-old Graford mother Leah Martin.

Following closing statements from the prosecution and the defense, the jury began deliberating at 11:45 a.m. and continued for nine hours before reaching a not guilty verdict.

Ezell continues recovery after July plane crash

Chad and Anna Ezell, son and daughter of Ezell Aviation Founder Nelson Ezell continue running their father’s business while he continues to recover from a plane crash in July.

Nelson Ezell’s prominence in Breckenridge had never been higher after re-launching the once famed Breckenridge Air Show, along with efforts from the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce, which added to the shock when his World War II-era CSEA Seafury British Hawker crashed on private property near Hwy. 183 before reaching the Ezell Aviation runway.

City commission nixes Walker-Sayle Unit rate cuts

The Breckenridge City Commission took no action to lower water rates for the Walker-Sayle Prison Unit during its meeting last Tuesday.

Breckenridge City Manager Andy McCuistion said if the city were to lower the prison’s water rates to a proposed rate of $6.20 per thousand gallons, then Breckenridge would lose revenue of $41,700, in addition to the $24,000 previously lost from lowering the rate to $8.60 per thousand gallons in April.

Prosecution rests in E.C. Blair murder trial

The Elton "E.C." Blair murder trial should come to an end sometime this week after the prosecution rested its case Monday afternoon.

Ninetieth District Attorney Dee Peavy rested the state’s case Monday following the testimony of Jim Reeves, a former investigator with the Graham Police Department, concluding a process that began Sept. 19.

Although the prosecution has wrapped up its case, the defense is expected to continue presenting witnesses through Tuesday.
