Stephens County Sheriff's Office

For the previous week, the sheriff’s office had 36 calls for service and served 4 sets of civil papers.  Calls for service include but are not limited to: 911 calls, proactive contacts, non-emergency calls, 

Monday, Aug. 21

• While investigating a family disturbance on CR 206, a 26-year-old male was arrested for a warrant out of Garza County related to possession of marijuana.

• A deputy transported an inmate to a prison near Abilene.

Medina trains for Chicago Marathon

While most of us are getting those extra winks, Barbara Medina is out running in preparation for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for the American Diabetes Association, Oct. 8. Both her grandmother, Theva Palacios, and her father, Samuel Medina, are diabetic.

Medina is no stranger to running a marathon. She caught the marathon bug after running a 5K in Dallas three years ago. She ran the Boston Marathon this past April and ranked 1100 of the 35,000 who participated. She is planning to run either the New York Marathon in January or the Berlin Marathon next September.

Plans already underway for 2018 junior rodeo

Efforts made in bringing the Stephens County Junior Rodeo seemed to have paid off from the turnout on Saturday as youth ages 4 through 16 competed against each other in the Stephens County Rodeo Arena.

Fun did not seem in short supply with area teens in children competing in various events by either horse or stick horse.

Prissy Brown, 2012 State Cutting Champion, stood aside as she watched her sister Paisley Herring compete in the goat-tying competition for her age division.

Breckenridge native takes residency at SMH

Breckenridge-native Kelli Knight-Windsor will begin her practice in medicine starting in October in the Breckenridge Medical Center.

Stephens Memorial Hospital CEO Matt Kempton, along with the other board of directors, believe Windsor’s services will bring better medical service to the community.

“Kelli is going to be coming in for orientation and observing the clinic before she starts. I’ve already started filling her schedule and people have already began requesting her so I’m excited about that,” said Kempton.

Rep. Conaway talks healthcare, taxes and more at legislative update

Citizens packed the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce meeting room Wednesday to be a part of 11th District Congressman Mike Conaway’s town hall style legislative update. 

After bringing the audience up to speed regarding the recent moves in Washington D.C. by house conservatives, Conway spent the remainder of his time fielding questions from Breckenridge citizens and said he now knows exactly where they stand on various issues when he casts a vote on the house floor.

Ezell family releases statement regarding plane crash victims

The following is a statement released by the Ezell family regarding Tuesday's plane crash and updates the status of Nelson Ezell and his passenger Dustin Mayfield.

"We do not want to speak on the incident at this time as the investigations by the NTSB and the insurance companies have not been conducted to determine the actual cause. There was an apparent loss of power during the landing approach to the runway and that is currently all that is known. 

Grease trap ordinance could mean restaurant, manufacturer fines

The Breckenridge City Commission took the first steps in insure clean sewerlines with passage of a grease trap ordinance earlier this month.

The ordinance requires applicable facilities to install, use and maintain grease traps or interceptors, prohibits discharging of excessive fats, oils and dressings into the city’s sewer system and provides civil penalties for related violations. 

County adopts roads, avoids limited access to subdivisions

The Stephens County Commissioners Court faced the options either  adopting roads previously managed by West Central Texas Municipal Water District or potential limited access to neighborhoods near Hubbard Creek Lake.

The court unanimously approved taking responsibility of two roads near Hubbard Creek, Water District Road 274 and Water District Road 277. Chris Wingert, water district general manager, said would face the possibility of being shut down, which would limit access to the Holiday Hills, Breezy Point and North Cove subdivisions

Men survive warbird crash

Two men were injured Tuesday morning when a vintage war plane crashed in a pasture near the Stephens County Airport.

The crash of a CSEA Seafury British Hawker was reported around 9:15 a.m. It landed in a pasture north of the airport and south of FM 2231, land owned by Brad Whitaker.

The plane’s occupants, Nelson Ezell and Dustin Mayfield, were taken by helicopter ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Forth Worth. 

Ezell sustained serious but not critical injuries, while Mayfield’s injuries were less serious, according to the men’s wives.
