BISD receive good audit report

It was a really good report according to Cheryl Merritt of Merritt, McLane & Hamby P.C. who presented the Breckenridge ISD’s financial audit and report.

Merritt presented the 2018-2019 Financial Audit to the BISD board after her firm conducted the annual audit.

Legislative 16.22 payment process finalized

Not many people have probably never heard of Legislative 16.22. Those that do know about it have been employed by or processed into a county jail in the last couple of years.

This legislative rides on the heels of the outcome of the very tragic incident in 2015 where a Texas woman by the name of Sandra Bland was arrested for failure to signal, a Class C misdemeanor, and three days later while still in police custody she was found deceased. It was ruled a suicide.

Breckenridge Student of the Month

The Breckenridge Independent School District honored four students who were awarded Student of the Month for October.

Pre-Kindergarten teacher Donna Wade wrote a letter that East Elementary Principal Barbra Collinsworth read about 4-year-old, Emalee Wehunt. 

Third-grade teacher, April Lechner, nominated third-grader, Adam McCullough, for October. Ms. Lechner said in a letter that North Principal Prairie Freeman read in front of the board and community.

Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce 'Denim & Diamonds'

There were laughs, fun and more as the community got together to socialize and raise money for Breckenridge.

The Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual 'Demin & Diamonds' banquet on Nov. 9. The event took place at the Stephens County AG and Community Center, where more than 100 guests from local businesses to community members gathered for a night of good food and great times. 

Veterans honored at Villa Haven

The Veteran’s that reside at Villa Haven Health and Rehab Center was visited by the Store Manager of the local Walmart, Daniel Cortinez, on Veteran’s Day, Monday, November 11. Cortinez visited on behalf of the Walmart and it’s staff to present these brave soldiers with gift bags to show them appreciation. The men were proud to share with all present their Military rankings and ranches as Mr. Cortinez shook their hands and thanked them for their service. A couple of the Veterans were unable to make it to the presentation, but Mr.

Rotary's 'Taste of the Holidays'

The Breckenridge Rotary brought the holidays a little early to the community, serving up Christmas and winter at their annual event.

Rotary’s Taste of the Holidays took over The Popular on Walker St. on Tuesday, Nov. 5 to showcase foods from local restaurants and farms. This two-hour event was enjoyed by more than 100 community members, showcased seven different tables of food and allowed guests to bid on auction items that were Christmas and winter-themed.

Police Chief announces retirement

He has been apart of the City of Breckenridge for more than three decades, but the city Police Chief has officially announced his retirement to the Breckenridge City Commissioners.

Breckenridge Police Chief, Larry Mahan, announced in front of the commissioners in their Nov. 5 meeting that he will retire on January 31, 2020. “I just wanted to let you all know that I will be leaving after 21 years as Chief and 32 years total with the city,” said Mahan. 

Local Deputy, wife recovering from house fire

No one is ever prepared to lose everything, but the community support surrounding Bill and Melynda Flournoy has been sincerely appreciated.

The Flournoy's house burned down on Oct. 3 of this year, taking everything that the family had with it. Bill Flournoy is a Stephen’s County Sheriff's Deputy and was home with his wife at the time of the fire.
